Rarity and Value: Very few national banks had the right criteria to issue a high denomination like this. That makes these notes scarce. There are two varieties. One is really scarce. If the back says “One Hundred Dollars” at the center in large print then you have a great find. Most examples will say “1882 – 1908”. Even the most generic examples should be worth a couple thousand dollars. Please contact us for exact values. Don’t forget to check the serial number. Number 1 notes always sell for nice premiums.
Current Market Analysis: The market for Maryland notes is mostly lukewarm right now. There are a lot of great notes from Maryland. However, they rarely see the light of day. They are tied up in long term collections. You rarely see more than a couple of interesting notes sell per year. If you don’t mind settling for big city notes, then the state is fairly easy to collect thanks to the huge supply of notes from Baltimore. Some old school collectors try to avoid Baltimore notes at all cost. Most collectors like notes from smaller towns. The location of the town is also important. Western Maryland notes aren’t quite as popular as notes from inside the beltway. There are lots of high-grade notes out there as bankers tended to save lots of the notes they signed.
