Rarity and Value: This is the highest denomination issued for the brown back series. These were printed in limited quantities. Many banks didn’t have the demand for such a high denomination from the general public. Today a very generic one of these should be worth around $3,500. That price can definitely get higher based on the condition and bank of issue. Please contact us for details. Don’t forget to check the serial number. Number 1 notes always sell for nice premiums.
Current Market Analysis: We personally love notes from Mississippi. However, most other collectors don’t feel the same way. In the 1980s Mississippi notes were highly prized for their rarity. Today there just isn’t a lot of demand, despite still being rare. Part of the problem is condition. Mississippi has always been a poor state. Paper money changed hands frequently and today it is usually found in very heavily circulated condition. Many notes are stamp signed, which is also less desirable. One of the last great anticipated discoveries is that of a first charter from Mississippi. None are currently known to exist. Brown backs and red seals (in high grades) are also rare. The same thing goes for #1 notes. There are not many to go around.
