Rarity and Value: William McKinley is featured on each $10 third charter note. The ten dollar denomination is the most common 1902 red seal. However, it is still usually quite scarce. Red seals were only printed between 1902 and 1908. Survivors usually represent the best available note from a bank. The exact value is always based on the condition and bank of issue. It is not unusual for scarcer examples to be worth thousands of dollars. Please contact us for details. Don’t forget to check the serial number. Number 1 notes always sell for nice premiums.
Current Market Analysis: We personally love national bank notes from Tennessee. Sadly, there are not a whole lot of people who feel that way. A couple of very important collections have sold in the past five years, and they simply didn’t do very well. The problem is that there is an oversupply of notes from cities like Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Memphis. For a national from Tennessee to be worth really big money it truly has to be rare. We are talking about serial number one red seals, unique brown backs, and rare denominations from the first charter period. That is not to say that blue seals and small size notes can’t be rare. However, the people spending big money on notes want something really special.
